Twin Lakes Trail
2005 Trip
2006 Trip
Trail Location and info: This is a fairly easy trail and I recommend it
for beginners or just for a day hike. It is about 3.5 miles, it does go over a
pass, but isn't really too steep. The trailhead is at Badger Flat on Kaiser
Pass Road about 4.5 miles above Huntington Lake. There is a paved parking lot for you to
park in. The trail is a little steep to start off with, but somewhat levels out
after a quarter mile or so. You will
eventually come to Potter Pass after about 2 miles. From there you get some
good views out toward Huntington Lake and the valley and you also have some
good views of Mt Ritter and Banner Peak to the north. Then you descend from
the pass and walk through a forested area. Then there is a fork where one
trail goes to Sample Meadow and the other to Twin Lakes. Take the left to Twin
Lakes. After some more walking you will come to Lower Twin Lake. Its a nice
little lake under a granite peak. You can camp here or go on to Upper Twin
Lake. I recommend continuing the couple hundred feet and going to Upper Twin.
Upper Twin Lake is a great place. There are some caves to spelunk and it is a
great lake to swim in. You can swim out to the island and maybe find some
rocks to jump off of. The mosquitoes aren't too bad (compared to Dinkey Lakes
Wilderness), but be sure to bring some deet. You can also continue up the
trail to George Lake. The trail gets pretty steep after Upper Twin, but it is
well worth it to visit the beautiful George Lake.
